Proximity Sensors

(a.k.a. prox sensor, inductive proximity sensors, capacitive proximity sensors)

The basics: a sensor that will detect the presence or absence of objects without any physical contact. Types of proximity sensors include inductive (requires metal target), capacitive (can handle metal/non-metal, liquids), photoelectric (uses beam of light to detect presence/absence) and ultrasonic (can measure distance to an object using sound waves). This page shows inductive and capacitive proximity sensors. Additional links: Photoelectrics   Ultrasonics
