Scroll compressors have earned a strong reputation in HVAC applications by proving to be a more reliable and efficient solution than other categories of compressors.
Scroll compressors are generally 10 to 15% more efficient than piston compressors. Worldwide initiatives promoting energy efficiency in the building sector are generating a growing interest for more cost saving and efficient HVAC solutions, making the use of scroll compressors more and more a necessity.
Softstarters provide a means of reducing high inrush currents and the associated effects. Through the application of a controlled voltage ramp or a current limiting algorithm, a smoother, jerk-free start is achieved.
Ramp-up time is slightly longer when compared to a DOL start, but still maintained below 600ms, so it complies with recommendations from scroll compressor manufacturers.
CARLO GAVAZZI has recently launched the RSBS Series single-phase plug-and-play soft start, which reduces the starting current with heat pumps, which are most popular in residential installations.
The Carlo Gavazzi RSBS soft start represents a solid innovation since it limits the amperage demand, which peaks when single-phase scroll compressors - usually used in heat pumps - are starting.
By maintaining the starting current below fixed limits, the RSBS allows to avoid high energy tariffs. It also reduces heat dissipation, thanks to bypassing of its internal power semiconductors.
The Carlo Gavazzi RSBS soft starter provides a 60% reduction in current and increases compressor lifetime. This new soft start extends the range of the already existing RSBS platform, to provide starting solutions for compressors rated up to 32 Arms. This product launch strengthens Carlo Gavazzi’s leading position in the single phase heat pump sector.
The RSBS can also be supplied with an optional auxiliary alarm relay (Option - V22).
