The Ultrasonic family of sensors from Pepperl+Fuchs use high frequency sound waves to detect the distance
of objects from the sensor face. Accomplished through the use of a precision high frequency transmitter/
receiver transducer and specialized controller electronics, the transmitter allows ultrasonic waves to be
coupled into the air so that wave reflections from the object can then be recognized by the receiver.
The ceramic piezo sends out a packets of sound pulses and converts the returning echo pulse into a
voltage that is calculated by the integrated controller using the echo time and speed of sound. Because of
the transmissioN pulse duration the transducer has a near range blind zone in which the ultrasonic sensor
cannot detect an object. Therefore, all transducer are specified with a usable distance range.
The ultrasonic frequency lies between 65kHz and 400 kHz depending on the sensor type, and the pulse
repetition rate between 14Hz and 140 Hz. The active range of the ultrasonic sensor is designated by Sd and
defines the longest usable sensing distance. This distance is often limited by the physical size of the transducer.
