What does a control power transformer (CPT) do?
A control transformer steps down the voltage in a power circuit in order to safely operate control devices
(contactors, relays, pushbuttons, etc.). Typical control voltages are 120 or 24 volts AC. There are also times
when other output voltages are necessary (instrumentation, flow meters, PLC's, etc.).
Transformers are AC to AC devices... you cannot transform DC. Transformers convert AC electricity from one voltage to another voltage, usually with little loss of power.
The input coil on a transformer is called the primary and the output coil on a transformers is called the secondary.
Industrial DC power supplies, on the other hand, reduce high voltage (generally AC) to a safer low DC voltage.
Marshall Wolf Automation can provide a transformer that fits the needs of the most demanding input or control voltage application. Engineers are on staff to assist you!
