Intrinsic safety (IS) is a protection technique for safe operation of electronic equipment in explosive atmospheres and under irregular operating conditions.

IS protection is used for process control instrumentation in hazardous areas, particularly North Sea gas platforms.

Intrinsic safety (IS) barriers are a core component of an intrinsically safe solution.

Intrinsic safety barriers are devices that limit current, voltage, & total energy delivered to a sensor or other instrument located in a hazardous area.

Limiting the energy prevents fires & explosions from occurring in areas with hazardous chemicals, gases or other ignitable atmospheres.

Intrinsically safe equipment & wiring means the products are not capable of releasing sufficient energy in a circuit to ignite a flammable atmosphere in a hazardous area. Choose from a broad variety of intrinsic safety barriers:

Explosion proof means there is an enclosed product that is capable of withstanding a gas or vapor explosion. Basically that any explosion would be contained within the enclosure.

Zone Definitions:

Zone 0: Zones in which a dangerous explosive atmosphere consisting of a mixture of air and gase, vapors or mist is present continually over a longer period or on a frequent basis.

Zone 1: Areas in which a dangerous explosive atmosphere consisting of gases, vapors or mist is to be expected from time to time.

Zone 2: Areas in which a dangerous explosive atmosphere consisting of gases, vapors or mist is not to be expected and where it does arise then in all probability only rarely and for a short period of time.

Explosion proof enclosures are designed to contain an explosion if an electrical device ignites flammable substances within the enclosure.

Intrinsic safety barriers (IS barriers) are designed to limit the current and voltage conducted through a device's power or signal wiring.

Purge and pressurization systems are designed to supply one or more protected enclosures with a clean instrument air or inert gas.
