Photoelectric Sensor Sensing Modes

Diffused Mode

The transmitter and receiver are in the same housing. Light from the transmitter will hit the target, some of that reflected light returns to the receiver and the target is detected.
Advantages include not needing a reflector or separate receiver. Disadvantages are that target color, size and finish can affect this type of sensor.

Diffused Convergent Beam Mode

A more efficient version of diffused mode. The transmitter lens is focused to an exact point in front of the sensor and receiver lens is focused to the same point. The sensing range is fixed and the sensor is able to detect an object at this focal point.
Ideal for sensing objects with a small profile and/or at a short distance.

Retro-Reflective Mode

Retro-reflective also has the transmitter and receiver in the same housing, however, a reflector is used to reflect the light from the transmitter back to the receiver. The target is detected when it blocks the beam from the sensor to the reflector.
Generally allows longer sensing ranges than diffused mode and is not affected by target color and finish.

Polarized Retro-reflective is the same as the above except it is suited for mirror-like objects and avoids false signals triggered by shiny surfaces.

Through-Beam Mode

This mode uses two separate housings - one for the transmitter and one for the receiver. The light from the transmitter is aimed at the receiver, when a target breaks the beam the output on the receiver is activated.
This is the most efficient and allows the longest possible sensing ranges.

Limited/Spot Reflected/Small beam reflected have the sender and receiver contained in one unit. Narrow beam ignores objects around target, great for small objects.

Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber optics are for applications involving small targest or unfavorable conditions. They can be used in much smaller areas, harsh environments and extreme temperatures.
Applications include: absence/presence of bottles or boxes on a conveyor, defect in material/size gauging, small parts counting, open box/flap detection, print mark registration and much more! Please contact us for clear surface detection though.
